Cup cakes, pup cakes fight cruelty to animals

Geraldton Guardian - - News - Adam Poulsen

It was a happy day for cake lovers of both the human and canine variety when the Geraldton Police Station hosted its annual Cupcake Day, as part of a major nationwide RSPCA fundraising event.

Staff members volunteered their time to cook a variety of goodies which were sold at the station on Monday, with all proceeds going directly to the animal welfare organisation.

But it wasn’t just staff who got to sample the sweet treats, with “pup” cakes also on offer for their canine companions.

The money raised will help the organisation continue its work in caring for, rehabilitating, and rehoming about 135,000 neglected, injured, abandoned and abused animals every year.

Geraldton Police Station customer service officer Heather Beswick, who helped organise the event, said everyone at the station had showed their support.

“The girls at the station have done all the baking, and I’d also like to thank the prisoners at Greenough — they also did a heap of baking for us, and they’ve brought down their prison dog Kai to star along with our police dog Ghost,” she said. Ms Beswick said the event was a great opportunity to support the RSPCA so they could continue to carry out their important work.

“The number one thing to achieve is to raise awareness in the community about how many animals are in need and how many animals are being cruelly treated,” she said.

“Secondly, we want to raise as much money as we can to support the RSPCA and the amazing work they do.”

Anybody in the community can hold a Cupcake Day event, with hosts from across the country raising more than $1.2 million last year.
