Winless Pumas’ coach still happy
Pumas’ season has ended winless after they lost to Lightning in the last round of the season.
Despite no wins on the ladder this season, coach Nic Gleghorn said she was happy with the season.
“I’m really proud of my young team,” she said.
“We’ve been developing our junior players up through the ranks and it’s great to see our senior players such as Ellerby Schultz, Mia Gleghorn and Caitlin Wilson mentoring the younger girls.”
“It’s been a great year and I’m really happy.”
Their last game of the season didn’t disappoint and it was a close match-up.
Intensity was high as Pumas had nothing to lose but Lightning didn’t want to go into finals off the back of a win.
Lightning applied some tight pressure through the mid-court, frazzling their opponents and as a result they held a steady sevengoal lead at the first break.
But it wasn’t enough to stop Pumas.
They came out giving their all, with youngster Hannah Trusso providing some crucial turnovers.
Kendall Schuts worked tirelessly for Lightning but Pumas turned things around and scores were level, 24-all at half-time. It was a scrappy stop-start third quarter, but Lightning’s young gun Mary Burke didn’t miss many shots and her side held a mere one-goal lead heading into the final quarter.
The last quarter played out much the same and it was a struggle for both sides to break away.
With a missed opportunity under the ring from Pumas and only minutes left, Lightning capitalised and then bided their time.
Lightning walked away with a close three-goal win, 48-45.
Kazuals cemented their top spot heading into finals with an eightgoal win over Aztecs.
Despite holding the upper hand at every quarter, it was a close last quarter.
Aztecs trailed by three goals at the first break and at half-time, but they ramped things up in the third quarter.
Kazuals shooters Mischa Westlake and Zoe Sellers were hard to stop but their side only held a onegoal lead heading into the final quarter.
Aztecs couldn’t keep up with Kazuals, whose accuracy got them over the line with a 62-45 win.
The semifinals will take place on Friday with a repeat of last week’s game, with Kazuals taking on Aztecs.
Sitting third and fourth, both Falcons and Lightning will need a win to keep themselves in the finals campaign.
