Geraldton Guardian - - Guardian | News -

Nominations for the upcoming City of Greater Geraldton election officially opened yesterday.

Residents and ratepayers are able to nominate themselves for eight vacancies on the City council.

One councillor is needed for a four-year term in each of the wards of Champion Bay, Chapman, Hills, Mullewa, Port and Tarcoola, while two are needed in the Wilcock ward, one of whom will have only a two-year term.

To apply, candidates need to complete a form, available through the WA Electoral Commission website, and submit a profile of no more than 150 words.

Nominations will close at 4pm on Thursday, September 14.

Ballots for the election will be posted out and must be returned by 6pm on Saturday, October 21.

Voting is not compulsory but Mayor Shane Van Styn encouraged people to have their say.

“Our councillors are the voice of the people,” he said.

“Council makes big decisions for our community.

“A strong council forms the foundation of an effective and efficient local government and I urge residents and ratepayers to assess the candidates and vote in this year’s election.”
