Clubs ready for start of the season
The 2017-18 Batavia Bowling League season is fast approaching, with Mid West clubs gearing themselves up for the start of the home and away pennants seasons for men and women, starting in the first week of October.
Several open events, including the Wonthella Ladies’ Classic and the Men’s August Classic, attracted strong numbers to set the scene for the upcoming year.
Last weekend the Denison club ran its annual Ladies’ Star Classic, while the Northampton ladies received great support for the Murray Criddle-nominated triples.
Geraldton last week opened the season with its Ladies’ Opening Day, sponsored by long-time member and patroness Margaret Sampey. The day saw the traditional spider roll open proceedings, with Marilyn Cope and Kelly Hodge the two left standing when all bowls came to rest.
The winner of the day was the side of Pat Belcher, Joan Darnley, Glenice Mildwaters and Liz Boyle, with Minna Rasmussen, Sue Smith, Pat Rowell and Freda O’Brien claiming second.
The weekly mixed scroungers at the Wonthella Bowling Club again attracted excellent numbers, with Phil Gale, Vic Luckhurst, Eddie Dodd and Wayne Brown winning through to the final.
Wayne Brown claimed the day ahead of Luckhurst.
This weekend, Geraldton Bowling Club ladies will hold the annual Batavia Coast Major League fours.
The two-day tournament will start at 9am both days.
