Cardinals take out rivals to claim shield
Grand finals in the J10/12 Junior competition were decided on Wednesday night at Mitchell and Brown Stadium.
An even first half saw the Cardinals and Australs girls go to the break 1-1 after Australs’ Hanna Dethlefsen evened the scores right on the half.
The second half was a different story, and at the 21-minute mark Gemma Dix made it 2-1, then 3-1 five minutes later. The Australs’ defence were keeping their team in the game with some good work, but two more goals to Cardinals within a minute widened the gap.
Lauren Newman made it 5-2 before Cardinals’ Kate Crudeli was presented with the shield as the winning captain.
The boys’ games between Saints and Australs looked ominous for Australs when Levi Quinton and Kye McVee both scored early.
Nic Duplex made it 2-1 to give Australs momentum into the break. A minute into the second half, it was 2-2 after a penalty corner conversion. That left 24 minutes for either team to score and claim a victory. Despite a Saints chance in the dying seconds, the result was to be decided by one-on-ones. When Australs’ final attempt was saved and Judd McVee scored, it was 5-4 to Saints.
In the Girls’ J7/9 grand final, Murchison had a come-frombehind win 3-2 against Australs.
In the Boys’ J7/9 grand final between Saints and Casuals, both had opportunities, but Saints claimed a 2-0 win.
