Benjamin nets prestigious medal for stand-out season

Geraldton Guardian - - Sport -

Dwayne Benjamin has taken out the S&K Electrical Geraldton Buccaneers’ Dan Hunt Medal for the 2017 SBL season.

Benjamin polled 70 votes to claim the award on Saturday night, ahead of fellow import Maurice Barrow on 64.

Coach Ray Evans said Benjamin’s consistency throughout the season made him a well-deserved recipient.

“He actually missed a few games throughout the season as well, so to do that and still win the award just shows how good and consistent he has been for us,” he said.

Evans also lauded Barrow for his consistency, saying his defence and versatility had been a highlight of his season.

Benjamin topped the season point scoring with 792, while Barrow had the highest free throw percentage of 85.3. Mat Wundenberg had the highest field goal percentage with 65.2, while Jackson Hussey topped the assists with 6.1 per game. Joey Iaria was name team man of the year. Dylan Myers took out the division one MVP award, with Coby Ryan runner-up.
