Ocean Classic yachties race to city
The 49th Fremantle to Geraldton Ocean Classic Yacht Race kicks off this afternoon at Leighton Beach and several Geraldton Yacht Club members will be participating.
Edrick and Jayden Delfos, Lee Sice, Phil Green, Laurie Hatch and David Robinson will be aboard Shiraz III, while Chantell Field will be a part of the Twitch crew and David von Felten on Al Fresco.
Run in conjunction between the South Perth and Geraldton yacht clubs, the race requires team cohesion and an element of luck with ocean conditions.
Mr Delfos, who is no stranger to this race, said he was looking forward to working with everyone onboard.
“I remember distinctly, unfortunately with a little bit of pain, that about 4am on the Monday morning was when the last boat finished one year,” he said.
“It can be a long race and as we know, the record finish is around 17 hours. It can be varying in time as it is wind dependent.”
With many of Delfos’ teammates making their Fremantle to Geraldton Ocean Classic debuts today, he is hopeful they can take away some long-term benefits from the experience.
“There is some challenges for a lot of them,” he said. “Not putting too fine of a point on it, but seasickness can be an issue.”
Delfos also gave an insight into the challenges of navigating through the dark, with the potential appearance of whales adding another variable to the list of elements the crew may encounter.
