Grommets enjoy swell conditions

Geraldton Guardian - - Sport - Adam Poulsen

After a recent lack of swell, competitors were relieved to wake up to decent waves for the fifth event of the Corner Surf Shop/Geraldton Board Riders Junior Development Club summer season at Back beach on Sunday.

“Luckily there was a kick in the swell on Saturday night, which provided waves big enough for the older competitors as well as our micro-grommets,” club president Shaun Glass said.

Glass said a trench running parallel to the beach made conditions tough for some, as surfers had to battle being dragged northwards.

The Hagan family continued to prove a force to be reckoned with, with cousins Jed and Jake claiming first prize in the under-14 and under-18 boys’ divisions, while Jake’s sister Shekya finished first in the under-14 girls’ division.

Byron Catto stepped it up again, winning the under-11 mixed division after finishing runner-up in event four.

His younger brother Kalani also surfed well, taking third place in the under-8 mixed division.

Glass said the club was continuing to go from strength to strength and boasted 60 junior members.

As the junior summer season draws to a close, Glass said organisers wished to thank sponsors and supporters.

The final event of the season will be held on March 11 at a beach to be announced.
