What’s new in entertainment

A Sunset Beach artist will open up her backyard to the public this weekend for her sixth annual Art in the Garden by the Sea.

Janeen Horne’s idyllic garden overlooking the Indian Ocean is the perfect backdrop for her vibrant and eclectic artwork, which is often inspired by the natural world around her.

The public will have a chance to wander around Horne’s garden on Saturday when her latest solo exhibition, Whispering Trees, is officially opened. The exhibition will feature about 40 pieces of Horne’s original gouache and acrylic paintings, and resin and mixed-media artworks.

“I have a close connection with nature from my childhood and spending time in the New Zealand bush with my father,” she said.

“I’ve always loved trees and I read an interesting article that Stan Maley (Midwest Times gardens columnist) wrote about how trees communicate with each other.

“When I’m in my studio, I love listening to the trees, you can hear them whispering in the wind. I find them really inspirational.”

Horne’s first Art in the Garden by the Sea event was held in 2004 as an opportunity to combine her three passions — gardening, nature and art.

Inspired by the backyard exhibitions held frequently in her homeland, Horne ditched the conventional art gallery space and embraced the great outdoors.

“I used to exhibit in galleries, but you don’t have a lot of control and they take quite a bit of commission,” she said.

“I thought ‘I’ve got a nice garden, why don’t I try and have one in my garden?’. In New Zealand, they do it quite a bit, so I did one and it was so successful.”

Horne planned to hold the solo exhibition biennially but more than three years have passed since the last event. The artist already has plans for her next exhibition, which will be held in 2020. She has also been named a finalist in the 2018 Hedland Art Awards, with the winners to be announced on Friday. “It’s pretty exciting to be a finalist,” she said. “I was a finalist last year, so it’s two years in a row — might win it one day!”

Art in the Garden by the Sea will be at 53 Volute Street, Sunset Beach, from 2pm. Live music will be provided by Sarah O’Malley.

About 40 art pieces by Janeen Horne will be on display in her sixth Art in the Garden by the Sea solo exhibition, Whispering Trees, on Saturday and Sunday.
