Rotary club vies for road safety award
Rotary Club of Geraldton has been named a 2018 Western Australian Regional Achievement and Community Awards finalist.
The club jointly runs an annual driver education program for year Year 10 and 11 Mid West students with the Rotary clubs of Batavia Coast and of Geraldton Greenough.
This year, the Rotary Club of Geraldton will vie for the Insurance Commission of Western Australia regional safety award, which the commission sponsors because of the over-representation of car crashes in regional WA.
In the last financial year, 2400 motor injury insurance claims were lodged in regional WA and the commission paid out more than $90 million to those injured.
The Rotary initiative in Geraldton focuses on fatigue, seatbelts, excessive speed, driver distraction and driving under the influence.
The Rotary Club of Geraldton is one of three finalists contending for the accolade and a $2000 prize. Award winners will be announced on October 19.
Geraldton Senior College students Sarah Broadhurst, Lily Riley and Maddison Conti have taken part in the local Rotary club’s driver education program.
