OPENS PLAYED: 3. BEST FINISH: T72 (2016). WORLD RANKING: No.91.
The Open Championship hasn’t been the happiest event for the long-hitting Scott Hend.
The 43-year-old, who represented Australia at the Rio Olympics and May’s GolfSixes, hadn’t made the cut until last year at Royal Troon. He went on to finish 72nd.
Despite that, Hend is putting another solid season together on the Asian Tour after winning its Order of Merit in 2016. The Queenslander is difficult to stop when his confidence is up and running which, in turn, means he also has a tendency to lose his game without warning.
This usually comes in the form of missed fairways – something you can’t really afford at Royal Birkdale with its long rough and pot bunkers.
Past performances and statistics suggest Hend won’t fare particularly well at Royal Birkdale, but if he keeps his long tee-shots away from trouble, he is more than capable of a strong showing. WINNING ODDS: $126*.
