OPENS PLAYED: Debut. BEST FINISH: N/A. WORLD RANKING: No.404.
Matthew Griffin flushed a wedge to within five feet to win last year’s New Zealand Open, beginning a campaign that saw him finish on top of the Australasian Tour Order of Merit and earn an invitation to Royal Birkdale.
“That’s what you play for really – I’ve grown up dreaming of playing in The Open,” Griffin said.
The 33-year-old Victorian, who was ranked the third best amateur in the world in 2008, now plies his trade on the Japanese Tour, where he’s one of the longest off the tee and inside the top-25 for putting. WINNING ODDS: $401*.
