Cameron Smith is a man of few words. In fact, the 23-year-old was left speechless after he claimed his first PGA Tour win at the 2017 Zurich Classic back in May.
Smith joined Adam Scott and Jason Day as the only Australians in the past 30 years to win on the PGA Tour before turning 24. Now based in Florida, he qualified for The Open after competing in that three-man playoff at last year’s Australian Open against Jordan Spieth and Ashley Hall.
“It’s going to be awesome,” Smith said of Royal Birkdale. “It’s the only major I haven’t played in yet, so I’m keen to get over there. That’s the one with all the history.”
His history at golf’s other three majors is solid, and is highlighted by a fourth-place finish at the US Open in 2015 where he was the only player not to card a round over par.
The Queenslander possesses an exceptional short game and is second on Tour for strokes gained around the green. WINNING ODDS: $126*.
