SAFEWAY OPEN CHAMPION
WINNING SCORE: 15 under, 273. DEFEATED: Fellow American Tony Finau by two shots. DEFINING MOMENTS: Steele, the defending champion, entered the final round two shots behind Tour rookie Tyler Duncan, who got off to a disastrous start with five bogies on the front nine knocking him out of contention.
After making the turn in three under without dropping a shot, Steele held the outright lead at 15 under par before the 34-year-old ran into trouble at the par-4 12th hole where he made bogey, dropping him into a tie for the lead with Finau.
Steele offset two bogies with rallying birdies at the par-5 16th and 18th holes to pull away from Finau, who also ran into trouble at the 14th making a double bogey. WITH THIS VICTORY… : • Steele’s win is his third on the PGA Tour after claiming
the same event in 2016. • With the Safeway Open being the first event of the PGA Tour’s 2017/18 wraparound season, Steele heads straight to the top of the FedEx Cup ranking. • The $1,116,000 winner’s cheque takes Steele to $12,553,171 in career earnings from 178 PGA Tour starts.
