We lead such busy lives that it can be easy to let cer­tain things go. A sur­vey of more than 10,000 Aus­tralian women found that 60 per cent of us don’t meet the rec­om­mended 2.5 hours of phys­i­cal ac­tiv­ity a week be­cause we’re too tired or just can’t find the time. The real prob­lem, ac­cord­ing to sur­vey di­rec­tor Dr Helen Brown, is that we think be­ing ac­tive means go­ing for a 10km run or slog­ging it out at the gym.

Her ad­vice? Go back to the ba­sics. “Phys­i­cal ac­tiv­ity is not about that; it’s just mak­ing sure you’re ac­tive through­out the day, like us­ing the stairs in­stead of the lift,” she says.
