But for the 31 per cent of Aus­tralians who re­port be­ing ad­dicted to their smart­phone or tablet, blink­ing hap­pens far less of­ten – 66 per cent less to be pre­cise. Not blink­ing enough leads to a lack of tears on the sur­face of the eyes that pro­tect them from ir­ri­tants and in­fec­tion. Vi­sion can also be af­fected be­cause these tears play an im­por­tant role in fo­cus­ing light. Op­tometrists are see­ing more and more pa­tients in their 40s with these symp­toms. Their ad­vice? Give your eyes a break! Ev­ery 20 min­utes, shift your eyes to look at an ob­ject at least six me­tres away, for at least 20 sec­onds.
