Staying very fit in middle age can lower your risk of dementia by almost 90 per cent, say Swedish researchers. They asked 191 women aged 50 to cycle until they felt physically exhausted, to test their fitness. After 44 years, only five per cent of the highly fit group were diagnosed with dementia, compared to 25 per cent of the moderately fit group and 32 per cent of those with low fitness.
