An ancient Ayurvedic practice, tongue scraping involves gently scraping the white coating off the tongue using a metal (often copper) U-shaped tool. “The theory behind it is that there are a lot of toxins that accumulate on the coating of the tongue overnight, so it’s helpful to eliminate them so they don’t get swallowed into the digestive system,” says Alison. “If you have halitosis, tend to get a thick coating on your tongue or your immune system isn’t that strong, it’s a good idea to try it as a morning ritual.”
