Hated PE as a kid? Bad news – it likely shaped how you feel about ex­er­cise to­day. Re­searchers from Iowa State Univer­sity ques­tioned more than a thou­sand adults, aged 18-40, and asked them to rate their mem­o­ries of PE and how they felt about ex­er­cise to­day – as well as their phys­i­cal ac­tiv­ity habits. Re­searchers said that peo­ple’s mem­o­ries of PE were sur­pris­ingly “vivid and emo­tion­ally charged” – and cast a long shadow. Those who had un­pleas­ant rec­ol­lec­tions were con­sis­tently more likely to say they didn’t like ex­er­cise now and didn’t plan to ex­er­cise in the com­ing days. On the other hand, those who rel­ished their gym classes were more likely to re­port be­ing ac­tive on week­ends.
