Piesolation tactics
When Devoney Scarfe went into isolation in New Zealand, she couldn’t have predicted pies would punctuate each day. But baking a less-than-great pie a week before going into lockdown set her on a quest for improvement. “I made it my mission to blind bake the perfect crust and it spiralled from there,” she says. Sweet and savoury pies with detailed crusts resembling memes and pop-culture icons (like the Piellennium Falcon, pictured) emerged from the oven. After studying fine arts and working in film and television, making pies offered a creative outlet for Scarfe while also feeding her family. “I wanted to regain that creative freedom I felt [when I was] at art school,” she says.
