you see Kelly Gale on the streets of New York, tall and mag­netic and vir­tu­ally sparkling, you will note sev­eral things. The frst is that she is tall and mag­netic and the air around her shim­mers – An­gel­like. The sec­ond is, if you’re a vir­ile Amer­i­can (or Amer­i­canstyle) man, you’ll be com­pelled to make an ap­proach. The third, she has head­phones on. Truth is – no mu­sic plays in those del­i­cate buds. “It’s true,” ad­mits Gale, in her thrilling Swedish ca­dence. “Men ap­proach you a lot here, so I of­ten walk around with head­phones in, even though I’m not lis­ten­ing to mu­sic. That de­ters most peo­ple. If they do ap­proach, I just pre­tend I don’t no­tice them or I say I have a boyfriend.” De­light­ful. And oh so prag­matic. In mag­a­zine profles of Gale – es­pe­cially those in Aus­tralia – the 20-year-old Vic­to­ria’s Se­cret run­way star is usu­ally ‘ours’. Yet while her fa­ther was a sports­man from Tatura, in the Goul­burn Val­ley, “I was born in Swe­den and have lived there since I was fve,” Gale says. “Mum’s from In­dia – she was adopted aged fve. But I did live in Aus­tralia for two years and try to get back there for Christ­mas with Dad’s side of the fam­ily.” Nor was she born in a quaint Swedish back­wa­ter.
