ILLUSTRATORS

Melbourne-based designers Kelly Thompson and Andrew Archer launched creative studio UNA in June, but have been collaborating since mid-2014. The pair gave us their colourful take on the biggest events of the year for our feature on p176.

DID YOU LIKE WORKING ON THIS PROJECT?

We enjoyed it a lot. The great thing about working in this abstract style is there is a nice degree of freedom. Your art director Josh was really friendly, too.

NEWS TO US. DO YOU HAVE A PREFERENCE FOR ABSTRACT OR REALISTIC STYLE ILLUSTRATIONS?

We enjoy realistic things for the pure satisfaction of nailing something correctly and feeling a personal sense of achievement. But overall, we probably lean towards the abstract because it’s fun to really push our skills and imaginations.

ANY WORDS OF WISDOM FOR BUDDING ILLUSTRATORS?

Be nice to clients and always meet deadlines, no matter what. Also, licence your work, charge accordingly and get it on paper, don’t just ‘do it for the exposure’ because it’s rarely worth it.

WHERE DO YOU HEAD FOR INSPIRATION?

We talk through ideas in the studio and head to galleries on the weekends. We love Behance and Tumblr, and do the daily social media trawl. We also have a stack of books by our favourite artists that we check out in our downtime.
