PHOTOGRAPHER

For this issue, Melburnian Tsiavis and his camera trekked into the Californian desert to shoot our fashion story (p112).

BEST THING ABOUT SHOOTING ON LOCATION?

Once a great location is found, everything falls into place – that is, the tone of the shoot becomes clearer and the story begins to unfold and everyone starts vibing off the environment, which helps inform decisions on styling, lighting and performance.

AND WHERE ARE SOME OF THE BEST LOCATIONS?

I shot for a client who flew me to Morocco, Madrid, Barcelona, Vancouver, Puerto Rico and Tokyo over three weeks.

HOW MANY CAMERAS DO YOU CARRY ABOUT?

It depends what I’m shooting. I usually travel with a medium-format kit which has a Leaf digital back and my 35mm Canon kit. If I know I have some down time, I take my Hasselblad Xpan film camera to shoot panoramic landscapes.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO PHOTOGRAPHY?

I taught myself photography to build a folio for my entrance exam to an advertising course. I wasn’t accepted on to the course but the interviewers suggested I meet with the photography department down the hall.

YOU’RE @JOHNTSIAVIS ON INSTAGRAM – WHO ELSE SHOULD WE FOLLOW?

@socalitybarbie is worth checking out.
