SOUTH AMERICAN MEANDER
From culture and food to snow and sand, this continent packs a mighty punch when wanting a solid, memory-filled trip. And Chile, survivor of civil – and geological – unrest is the breakout destination. Santiago’s historic Barrio Lastarria district is full of cultural gems, so immerse yourself in the Museum of Contemporary Arts, followed by hitting up whichever wine bars and eateries take a fancy. Stay at the Lastarria Boutique Hotel for a local feel or if you’re pushing the boat out, head to winery-cum-retreat Viña Vik, two hours south of the capital. With Chile as a base, collect other South American passport stamps by going to Peru’s Machu Picchu, Colombia’s Santuario de las Lajas, the Bolivian capital, La Paz, and home of this year’s Olympics, Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro. But don’t overdo it as South America is huge and internal flights are pricey, so plan carefully to maximise relaxation time. Go in September to November when the weather’s pleasant and prices are more affordable.
