As nick­names go, it’s not bad. “The boys [at Syd­ney Swans] call me Der­ickx Zoolander,” chimes the stat­uesque AFL player, and clothes horse, Tom Der­ickx. “And the rib­bing doesn’t stop. But you know, the modelling’s a good out­let as footy can be stren­u­ous on the body and the mind at times.” De­spite strong in­dus­try buzz that his looks and physique would eas­ily gen­er­ate work in the US, the 28-year-old’s fo­cus is frmly on the 2016 foot­ball sea­son and a de­sire to de­liver af­ter last year was marred by in­jury. “I’m in a pretty good spot, head­ing into the sea­son with a proper pre-sea­son un­der my belt. The is­sue last year was my knee, I had ten­donitis and that set me back a bit.” While the ruck-for­ward will start the year with a bro­ken fnger – “it hap­pens when you train with foot­balls ev­ery day” – he’s ea­ger for the frst round to show where he’s at and hope­fully see Syd­ney through to a fnals berth come Septem­ber. Un­til then, he found time to talk us though the goto rou­tines he uses to book­end each train­ing ses­sion. The 2016 AFL sea­son starts March 24;
