THE SEASON AHEAD
Warming up (and down) with footy player and model Tom Derickx.
As nicknames go, it’s not bad. “The boys [at Sydney Swans] call me Derickx Zoolander,” chimes the statuesque AFL player, and clothes horse, Tom Derickx. “And the ribbing doesn’t stop. But you know, the modelling’s a good outlet as footy can be strenuous on the body and the mind at times.” Despite strong industry buzz that his looks and physique would easily generate work in the US, the 28-year-old’s focus is frmly on the 2016 football season and a desire to deliver after last year was marred by injury. “I’m in a pretty good spot, heading into the season with a proper pre-season under my belt. The issue last year was my knee, I had tendonitis and that set me back a bit.” While the ruck-forward will start the year with a broken fnger – “it happens when you train with footballs every day” – he’s eager for the frst round to show where he’s at and hopefully see Sydney through to a fnals berth come September. Until then, he found time to talk us though the goto routines he uses to bookend each training session. The 2016 AFL season starts March 24; afl.com.au
