Founded in 2012, it’s an on­line graphic de­sign plat­form that of­fers ac­cess to de­sign tools and tem­plates. De­spite be­ing less than four years old, Canva al­ready has 10 mil­lion users and is at­tract­ing staff from Sil­i­con Val­ley, putting the na­tional brain drain into re­verse. “The tech land­scape in the US is far more de­vel­oped than Aus­tralia’s,” says Me­lanie Perkins (1), co-founder and CEO of Canva. “Sil­i­con Val­ley has at­tracted the best ta­lent for decades, whereas Aus­tralia is just get­ting started; some­thing we were aware of from the off. But ev­ery coun­try has its own unique op­por­tu­ni­ties. We have Amer­i­can em­ploy­ees, who moved to Aus­tralia be­cause they were ex­cited about what we’re try­ing to do.”
