Since the first bottles of red wine entered China, there have been old wives’ tales, anecdotes and first-person accounts of red wine being used as a mixer – namely with coke. “I’ve never seen it, and then I think, don’t we do it with beer?” asks Gago. “A shandy, right? In America, when I started going in the late ’80s, shandies were everywhere. “The number of stories I’ve heard about Grange with Coca-cola. I just think, why not with Fanta?” he laughs. “In the past, when red wine was first introduced to China I’m guessing a lot of wineries dumped the inferior product. It probably wasn’t the best, and it was also new to most Chinese people too. Perhaps Coke was used to sweeten it up?”
