Since the first bot­tles of red wine en­tered China, there have been old wives’ tales, anec­dotes and first-per­son ac­counts of red wine be­ing used as a mixer – namely with coke. “I’ve never seen it, and then I think, don’t we do it with beer?” asks Gago. “A shandy, right? In Amer­ica, when I started go­ing in the late ’80s, shandies were ev­ery­where. “The num­ber of sto­ries I’ve heard about Grange with Coca-cola. I just think, why not with Fanta?” he laughs. “In the past, when red wine was first in­tro­duced to China I’m guess­ing a lot of winer­ies dumped the in­fe­rior prod­uct. It prob­a­bly wasn’t the best, and it was also new to most Chi­nese peo­ple too. Per­haps Coke was used to sweeten it up?”
