Proof small markets often make for big companies, Redbubble was founded in 2006 and is an online marketplace for print-on-demand products based on user-submitted art. CEO and co-founder Martin Hosking (4) is a veteran of the tech space and a survivor of the first dot-com boom. He says that the obstacles to starting a company in Australia have been removed thanks to the internet’s rapid evolution. “The big natural disadvantage we have is that the Aussie market is too small and it’s difficult to reach a global marketplace. With that barrier removed, we can leverage our natural advantages. The biggest advantage we have is that people want to live here. That means there’s good talent, plus those advantages of lifestyle, like a decent education system, reasonable government support, and a good pool of liquidity through the superannuation funds. All of that would not be enough in the past.”
