PARTY TIME

GQ (Australia) - - GQ WATCH -

On paper, there’s little to link Corum, a traditional Swiss watchmaker, with Steve Aoki, a cake-throwing, crowd-surfing mega DJ. Still, we live in perplexing times and such improbable partnerships can occur. Time for the watch brand began in 1955. By 1960, it was producing its mould-breaking, square-faced ‘Admiral’s Cup’ watches – whose 12-sided descendants shape the brand’s image today. Steve Aoki is a long-haired, vest-wearing EDM deity who’s famous for throwing baked goods at subservient fans. He’s also credited by Guinness World Records for being the “most travelled musician in one year” (2014). The partnership hardly screams symbiosis, but if there were one watch that might bring these two worlds together, it would be the ‘Bubble’. Revealed as Corum’s big millennial launch, the ‘Bubble’ was updated at this year’s Baselworld. The barmy, bulbous creation now sits at 47mm in diameter and a lofty 18.8mm in height. Corum announced its partnership with Aoki this winter, the stadiumfiller given creative carte blanche to design his very own ‘Bubble’. Expect him to drop it any time now.
