On pa­per, there’s lit­tle to link Co­rum, a tra­di­tional Swiss watch­maker, with Steve Aoki, a cake-throw­ing, crowd-surf­ing mega DJ. Still, we live in per­plex­ing times and such im­prob­a­ble part­ner­ships can oc­cur. Time for the watch brand be­gan in 1955. By 1960, it was pro­duc­ing its mould-break­ing, square-faced ‘Ad­mi­ral’s Cup’ watches – whose 12-sided descen­dants shape the brand’s image to­day. Steve Aoki is a long-haired, vest-wear­ing EDM de­ity who’s fa­mous for throw­ing baked goods at sub­servient fans. He’s also cred­ited by Guin­ness World Records for be­ing the “most trav­elled mu­si­cian in one year” (2014). The part­ner­ship hardly screams sym­bio­sis, but if there were one watch that might bring these two worlds to­gether, it would be the ‘Bub­ble’. Re­vealed as Co­rum’s big mil­len­nial launch, the ‘Bub­ble’ was up­dated at this year’s Basel­world. The barmy, bul­bous cre­ation now sits at 47mm in di­am­e­ter and a lofty 18.8mm in height. Co­rum an­nounced its part­ner­ship with Aoki this win­ter, the sta­di­um­filler given cre­ative carte blanche to de­sign his very own ‘Bub­ble’. Ex­pect him to drop it any time now.
