THE SCIENCE OF SCENT
Aquatic scents are becoming a genre unto themselves and the marine accords this fragrance – think sea spray – are flanked by the lemony zing of bergamot and the bitterness of cardamom, which in this case has a hint of star anise.
Earthy blue orris accord provides a bridge between the ocean and the orchard, with basil verbena – an excellent name for a ’40s film noir character BTW – alongside the added herbal depth of clary sage.
Mr Lauren – or at least his licensing arm – has played it safe with warm, nutty patchouli, which works well as a counterpoint to the marine accords in the other notes. And a touch of suede adds a powdery softness that becomes apparent the longer it’s worn. Polo ‘Blue’ EDP, $139 (125ml).
