“In 47 seconds you get a fair bit of time to think and it feels like a lot longer. You try to nail everything to get that perfect race. At the turn [50-metres], I knew I had to be within a second of the fastest guy and I knew the guys next to me, [Canadian] Santo Condorelli and [American] Nathan Adrian were gonna go out fast. My plan was to swim close to the lane rope and get on Nathan’s wash – a bit like surfing his wave. With 25m to go, I could see I was only half a body length behind, if that. I was breathing to Santo’s side and had no idea what position I was actually in, but knew it was good. I didn’t know I had won until I looked up at the clock. I was like, ‘Wow, that’s nuts!’ and I looked to check where Cam [Mcevoy] had come because he’s a great mate of mine, and my heart sank.”
