To mark the 10th anniversary of our Men of the Year Awards, we asked Team GQ for insights on how the event – and the issue – comes together. From cover shoots to celebrity wrangling, here’s a taste of what goes on behind the scenes to make it all happen.

JOSH BEGGS creative director

“Being our 10th year, we really wanted 2016 to feel like a celebration. The event itself is always such a fantastic party, so we wanted that fun vibe to come across in our portraits. This year, we made a conscious effort to get out of the studio and on location, and we were lucky enough to enlist some of the best celebrity photographers in the world to help capture our winners enjoying their time in the spotlight.”

MIKE CHRISTENSEN managing editor

“After 18 months of emails, phone calls and meetings to wrangle the winners, seeing all the covers come to fruition and look so great next to one another is extremely rewarding – and testament to the calibre of photographers we work with. I’m so chuffed with the photos of Chris – especially as we had three days to prep that shoot.”

OLIVIA HARDING market editor

“This year’s Men of the Year issue brought new meaning to the word ‘hustle’. Countless flights, call sheets, celebrity riders and conference calls straddling four time zones meant that most days I was in the Bermuda Triangle of production. Then there were the joys of dressing/ undressing celebs, running in and out of luxury dressing suites on Rodeo Drive, oh, and throwing ice-cold water over Iggy Azalea.”

BRAD HOMES fashion editor

“Shooting with Chris and Doug was a total dream. Chris’s massive arms posed a challenge, but it was nothing a little Dolce & Gabbana couldn’t fix. We wanted to keep his styling effortless and relaxed – much like his very handsome self.”

RICHARD CLUNE deputy editor

“Securing award winners to shoot, interview and attend is a process akin to herding cats – but there’s also great excitement that comes with our MOTY awards. Until we remember the need to fill the remaining pages of the issue. Then it’s time to reach for that emergency bottle of Chivas Regal.”

DIANA KAY marketing director

“With all the winners looking so stylish on the night, it’s easy to forget the hard work that goes on behind the scenes to make it all happen. From arranging flights to fine-tuning the guest list, designing invitations and the event space itself – there are just so many things that go into making it happen. And this is the best yet.”
