To mark the 10th an­niver­sary of our Men of the Year Awards, we asked Team GQ for in­sights on how the event – and the is­sue – comes to­gether. From cover shoots to celebrity wran­gling, here’s a taste of what goes on be­hind the scenes to make it all hap­pen.

“Being our 10th year, we re­ally wanted 2016 to feel like a cel­e­bra­tion. The event it­self is al­ways such a fan­tas­tic party, so we wanted that fun vibe to come across in our por­traits. This year, we made a con­scious ef­fort to get out of the studio and on lo­ca­tion, and we were lucky enough to en­list some of the best celebrity pho­tog­ra­phers in the world to help cap­ture our win­ners en­joy­ing their time in the spot­light.”

“Af­ter 18 months of emails, phone calls and meet­ings to wran­gle the win­ners, see­ing all the cov­ers come to fruition and look so great next to one an­other is ex­tremely re­ward­ing – and tes­ta­ment to the cal­i­bre of pho­tog­ra­phers we work with. I’m so chuffed with the pho­tos of Chris – es­pe­cially as we had three days to prep that shoot.”

“This year’s Men of the Year is­sue brought new mean­ing to the word ‘hus­tle’. Count­less flights, call sheets, celebrity rid­ers and con­fer­ence calls strad­dling four time zones meant that most days I was in the Ber­muda Tri­an­gle of pro­duc­tion. Then there were the joys of dressing/ un­dress­ing celebs, run­ning in and out of lux­ury dressing suites on Rodeo Drive, oh, and throw­ing ice-cold wa­ter over Iggy Aza­lea.”

“Shoot­ing with Chris and Doug was a to­tal dream. Chris’s mas­sive arms posed a chal­lenge, but it was noth­ing a lit­tle Dolce & Gab­bana couldn’t fix. We wanted to keep his styling ef­fort­less and re­laxed – much like his very hand­some self.”
