Truly super markets
The new Amazon Go stores, the first test version of which recently opened in Seattle, are part of a trend towards what Woolworth’s chief executive, Brad Banducci, calls “extreme convenience”. Customers download an app and then swipe their phones as they enter the store - to begin what is a high-paced shopping excursion. In a process that uses “computer vision”, alongside AI, every item put in a trolley is instantly tracked on your phone (if returned, its deleted). On leaving the store, a bill is calculated and charged to your Amazon account – a digital receipt then sent through. While there have been some initial difficulties at the test store in tracking more than 20 shoppers at a time, and a few concerns regarding theft – once this is operational, watch as the others scramble to replicate it. And sadly say goodbye to that weekly chat with Sally on the checkout.
