Comebacks the way for Rae in title feat
Katanning Tennis Club held its Club Championships over the month of April and with multiple club championship winner Peter Rundle unavailable, the men’s titles were wide open.
Geoff Stade went into the men’s final against Eric Rae in solid form with wins against Robbie Anthony and Tyler Caldwell in the quarter and semifinals, while Rae had two tough come-from-behind wins against Craig McKinley and David Stade.
Geoff Stade stormed out of the blocks and won the first set easily and it looked as though the engravers could get to work early as Stade took the set 6-0.
Rae dug deep in the second set to win 6-4 and in the super tie breaker, Stade moved out to an early lead before Rae came home strongly to win the third set 10-7 and crowned men’s club champion.
The ladies’ final was a titanic battle between past champion Emily Bessell and Tanya Le Roux.
Both players had tough three-set wins in the semis over Emily McGuire and Sue Thompson respectively.
The final was another three-set affair with both players having looked like gaining control in parts.
The super tie break was a seesawing affair with Le Roux eventually breaking through for her first club championship, winning 6-4 1-6 10-8.
The men’s doubles final featured Geoff Stade and Hamish Thompson against David Stade and Simon Kerin.
The match ebbed and flowed with no team gaining ascendancy.
The combination of Geoff Stade and Thompson raced to an early lead and had four match points before David Stade and Kerin showed great determination to fight back and level the super tie break at 10 points apiece.
David Stade and Kerin won the next two points under enormous pressure to be claim club doubles champions honours.
The ladies’ doubles final was a contest between the team of Brooke Dellacqua and Sue Thompson versus Emily McGuire and Emily Pinney.
Both teams played some exciting rallies though it was the experienced team of Dellacqua and Thompson who prevailed to win in two hard-fought sets 6-4 6-4.
The mixed doubles final was between David Stade and Thompson against the Geoff Stade and Dellacqua combination.
The experience of previous winners Dellacqua and Stade shone through in a convincing win, 6-3 6-0.
