When the earth shook Broomehill

Great Southern Herald - - Front Page - Sjanna Sandalova

This week marks 10 years since the region was hit by one of the biggest earthquakes recorded in the Great Southern.

The quake measured 4.8 on the Richter scale and was centred just south of Katanning.

Authorities classed it as the biggest earthquake to hit the region in five decades and was felt by people hundreds of kilometres away, even in Perth.

The tremor rocked one Broomehill home, leaving behind a trail of destruction.

Resident at the time, Grant Taylor, described the quake as an explosion which felt like the house had been picked up and thrown back down within seconds.
