The All Ages Playground will stay in its current location after community pleas.

The All Ages Playground will remain in its current location after the community displayed strong support for it to stay during a vote.

Residents were invited to join members of the Shire of Katanning council last Monday in a bid to formalise the outcome of the position of the playground, located at the corner of Clive Street and Great Southern Highway, after months of debate.

Shire president Liz Guidera and designers presented the two options for the Welcome Zone plan — one with the playground in its current position and one with it located in Lion’s Park.

“The councillors were very mindful of the fact that why do a concept plan for the AAP and another concept plan at Lion’s Park when the community overwhelmingly wants to keep the playground where it is,” she said.

“So we moved to formalise that by having a public meeting and giving the community the opportunity to come and express their views. It’s a good outcome because we don’t have to get logged down into doing two concept plans — we are really appreciative that the community came to voice their opinions.”

Matt Collis, an active member of the community and part of Katanning Neighbourhood Watch, said the purpose of the plan was to draw people into the town.

“I think it’s the right decision for the town, the vote was overwhelming,” he said.

The playground is believed to undergo repairs and renovations within the next two years.

“The timeframe for renovations was discussed based on the fact that some items retained would need to be removed, reworked then refitted and some will remain as features,” Mr Collis said.

Two options were given — one with the playground in its current position and one with it moved to Lion’s Park.

The All Ages Playground features giant slides, swings and oversized horses as well as a junior play area.
