Fatal road crash under scrutiny
Police were informed by a motorist of a road crash at the eastern entrance to Nyabing on Richmond Street just after midnight on Saturday, October 28.
Katanning police responded and were assisted by two staff members and one light truck from the Department of Fire and Emergency Services, in Dumbleyung, and a paramedic from St John Ambulance.
A 46-year-old man with connections to Nyabing and Narrogin was pronounced dead at the scene.
Katanning police Senior Sergeant Simon Underwood said the major crash investigation unit was investigating the fatality. “Police investigators from the major crash investigation unit will undertake inquiries into this road fatality and prepare a report to the Coroner,” he said.
The 2017 road toll is 124 with 55 fatalities in the metropolitan area and 69 fatalities in Regional WA.
Of those 69 fatalities, 10 have been in the Great Southern.
“This is a tragic reminder to us all in the lead-up to the final two months of 2017 on the importance of road safety at all times when in control of a motor vehicle and most importantly to ensure the safety of others in our vehicle,” Sgt Underwood said.
“The Road Safety Commission website has a vast array of information on road safety, statistics and useful guides.”
The driver failed to negotiate a bend and the vehicle rolled down an embankment.
