Katanning Toy Library is reaching out to potential members as the group celebrates its 30th anniversary of incorporation.

KTL is a not-for-profit volunteer community group that loans out toys, games and puzzles to members in a similar manner to a borrowing a book from the public library.

“Our toys are suitable for children from six months to six-plus years of age,” KTL president Amy Richardson said.

“We have approximately 450 toys available for loan including puzzles and board games, baby toys, imaginative play centres (kitchens, tool workshops, shops), pushalong and ride-on toys and bikes, and construction sets like Duplo.”

The toy library aims to support local families and encourages parents and children to socialise and spend time together.

“Babies develop so quickly and they are constantly outgrowing their toys — it would cost a fortune to buy every toy you want them to have and take up too much space,” Mrs Richardson said.

“We love being able to just borrow the toys and return them.”

Toy libraries are built to support child development through play and encourage learning by making it fun, according to Toy Libraries Australia.

Katanning Toy Library was incorporated on March 24, 1988 and the group plans to host an anniversary event later in the year.

Member Ella Maesepp said her children loved using the toy library.

“We've been members for four years and still haven’t borrowed all the toys because there are just so many,” she said.

Katanning Toy Library is open from 10.30am-11.30am on Tuesdays and Saturdays at the Katanning Library and is supported by the Shire of Katanning.
