Heritage houses at the heart of local suburbs
THE focus on heritage in Vincent continues, with the annual Sustainable Design Expo rebranded the Heritage and Eco Ideas Day.
Jason Saunders, from building and interior design business arc seven.1, is among the presenters at the November 7 event, which aims to encourage residents to sustainably renovate or maintain heritage and character houses.
Mr Saunders won multiple awards for his renova- tion of a 75-year-old North Perth house, where he and his family now live.
“The house was 75 years old and I think we’ve bought another 75 years at least,” he said.
“It can be done; you can never replicate the original exactly but you don’t need to bowl the house over. If you get the orientation right, that’s half the battle.”
Mr Saunders said making older properties ecofriendly did not have to be more difficult than renovating newer houses and was actually the more sustainable option.
“It’s fantastic that councils are taking steps to protect heritage,” he said.
“I’m 100 per cent supportive of tighter controls. If we don’t do something, the character of North Perth is going to be lost.
“People have moved into the area for that character and it would be a shame to lose it.”
