Fashion designer looks to the past
ALVIN Fernandez is digging in to the archives to create a new collection to commemorate 20 years of his label ae’lkemi at Perth Fashion Festival.
“I’m going back in to the archives for references on shapes and silhouettes to see what I can revive. It’s cool to see that some are still relevant today,” Fernandez said.
The Mt Hawthorn resident started his label in 1998 and will celebrate 20 years with a runway show at Fashion Paramount on Wednesday, September 12 from 9pm.
Fernandez made his international runway debut in Milan in 2003.
“I was so green, I was like a deer in headlights and it was my first trip to Europe,” he said.
“It made me see design in a new light and it has influenced the way I have designed.”
Fernandez made his PFF debut in 1999 and was named Student Designer of the Year, winning the Eveningwear category.
Ae’lkemi first appeared at PFF in 2011.
Ray White Dalkeith Claremont director Vivien Yap is part of PFF for the second year, sponsoring ae’lkemi’s runway show.
The Claremont-based designer regularly dresses Yap for awards nights and personal engagements.
“Ae’lkemi pieces are designed to the body shape and Alvin is a master at that because he understands the women’s silhouette and knows how to make it look amazing,” Yap said.
“I regard fashion pieces as a good investment just like a piece of real estate.”
