Bowling club wins reprieve
INGLEWOOD Bowling Club can continue its more than 60-year history after a decision to close it was reversed.
The City of Stirling advised the club in July it would no longer financially support it at the Mt Lawley site.
But councillors revoked the decision at the September 4 meeting, voting to give the club at least three years to operate.
Club manager Ken McCallum said that was the best outcome the club could have hoped for.
“When we first told (members) they were ecstatic,” Mr McCallum said.
It was a stark contrast from “people crying” when the 80 bowlers and 70 social members found out the club would fold.
As part of the council decision, funding for building maintenance and shade sails and a further extension to the lease would be considered at the mid-year budget review.
Mr McCallum said the shade sails were needed but believed the building did not need refurbishment.
He said the club now needed to build itself back up and was seeking sponsorship, as well as new social and bowling members.
