Dubbedthe‘Char­lieParkerof thep­i­ano’,BudPow­ell(27 Septem­ber,1924to31July,1966) wa­so­ne­ofthe­o­rig­i­na­tor­softhe be­bop­move­mentinthe1940s alongsideParker,DizzyGille­spie andTh­elo­niusMonk.Although­his ca­reer–an­dlife–was­b­light­edby men­tal­prob­lems,al­co­holand­long staysin­hos­pi­tal­stem­mingfroma po­lice­beat­inghere­ceive­datthe ageof20,Pow­elliso­ne­ofthe­most im­por­tant­pi­anistsin­jazz,with­Bill Evansno­tably­hail­inghi­mas“ina class­by­him­self”.Some­ofPow­ell’s finestrecord­ingswere­fortheBlue Note­la­bel,where,be­tween1949 and1958,here­leased­sev­eral al­bum­sin­clud­ingth­e­fivevol­ume­sofThe Amaz­ingBudPow­ell.Pow­ell’sear­lyre­leases are­con­sid­ered­his­best,ashealthissuestooka se­ri­ous­tol­lon­his­later­play­ing.

Ho­raceSil­ver(2Septem­ber,1928to18 June,2014)was­renowned­both­forhis dis­tinc­tive­play­ingstyle­and­his­mem­o­rable com­po­si­tions,con­tribut­ing­such­stan­dard­sas SongForMyFather(which­servedas­the­ba­sis forS­teelyDan’sRikkiDon’tLoseThat Num­ber),ThePreacher,Peace,and­Sis­ter Sadie.Sil­ver’sfirstBlueNoteRecord­sre­lease wasIn­tro­duc­ingTheHo­raceSil­verTri­oin 1953,and­from1956on­ward­sh­ere­corded ex­clu­sive­ly­forthe­la­bel,re­leasin­gover20 al­bum­san­dremain­ing­with­the­mu­ntil1980. Sil­ver­wa­so­ne­ofthe­p­i­oneer­soft­he­hard-bop move­mentofthe50sand60s,with­which BlueNoteRecord­sis­prin­ci­pallyas­so­ci­ated. Her­bieHan­cock(bornApril12,1940) re­main­so­ne­ofthe­giantsof­mod­ern­jazz.A bril­liant­pi­anist,Han­cock­rose­to­promi­nence asakeymem­berofMilesDavis’Sec­ondGreat Quin­te­ta­longsideWayneShorter.Later Han­cock­pi­oneeredtheuse­of­elec­tronic key­boards,buthis60sBlueNoteRecords tenure­was­firm­lyinthea­cous­tic­jaz­zworld, and­found­hi­matthe­fore­frontofthe­p­ost-bop style.Han­cock­wasal­soanac­claimed com­poser,with­stan­dard­s­likeCan­taloupe Is­land,MaidenVoy­age,Water­mel­onManand Dol­phinDance­to­his­name.Along­witha se­rieso­fac­claimed­soloal­bums,inthe60she was­apro­lific­side­man­forBlueNoteRecords, with­adiscog­ra­phy­in­clud­in­gre­leas­esby WayneShorter,Gran­tGreen,LeeMor­gan, Fred­dieHub­bar­dandTonyWil­liams.

Jim­mySmith(De­cem­ber8,1925to Fe­bru­ary8,2005)wasamas­terofthe Ham­mondB-3or­gan,whosemixof­soul, blue­sand­jaz­zat­tainedther­ared­ual achieve­mentof­jaz­za­c­claimand­com­mer­cial suc­cess.Smith’stenure­with­BlueNote Recordswas­re­mark­ablypro­lific,pro­duc­ing clos­e­to40ses­sion­si­naneight-yearpe­riod from1956.Smithre­turned­tothe­la­belfor sev­er­al­re­leas­esinthe1980sand1990s, cul­mi­natin­gin1993’sTheMasterIandII.
