Example3 Applying polyrhythms to riffs
EMcLaughlin was famous for his use of polyrhythmic and dual metre riffs with The Mahavishnu Orchestra, and the seeds of this concept were sown with The Graham Bond Organization. In this example a riff is created that contrasts the ‘8ths’ feel in the first two bars by emphasising a ‘2’ feel in bar 3. This is then subdivided in the final bar to create a '4 over 6' polyrhythm. Being rhythmically creative is another a great way to sound fresh.
