Example5 Double time turnaround lick

Guitar Techniques - - Lesson: R&B -

Charlie Parker pioneered double time phrasing in the early days of bebop jazz and it remains an effective improvising tool to this day. Notice how the Db chord in the first bar is 'ignored' by forcing a G Phrygian Dominant scale (mode 5 of the Melodic Minor) over both chords. The II chord of any II-V progression can always be ignored in this way, since in this context it simply functions as a V7sus4.
