Whole-tone scale over Am7

Guitar Techniques - - Lesson: Jazz -

This demonstrates the sound of the Whole-Tone scale up (or down) a semitone over a minor 7 chord. The most effective way to use this is as an outside sound, so I’ve put together a couple of reasonably straightforward lines over an Am7 chord moving from Am7 to Bb Whole-Tone and back to Am7, the first starting in A Minor Pentatonic moving down in groups of

four notes, then keeping the pattern going switching to Bb Whole-Tone in the second bar and resolving back to A Minor Pentatonic in the fourth. The second line is an ascending pattern, this time moving from A Dorian to Bb Whole-Tone and resolving back to A Dorian towards the end of the penultimate bar.
