[Bars 1-8] It can be sur­pris­ingly dif­fi­cult to find the sweet spot be­tween over or un­der-mut­ing, or even pick­ing too hard when us­ing th­ese light palm-mutes. The real test is mak­ing sure the longer notes carry for at least three beats. [Bars 9-16] When play­ing th­ese longer quar­ter-note triplets it’s a good idea to feel or even vo­calise the tied note at the be­gin­ning of the triplet to an­tic­i­pate the rhythm. Try and vary your pick at­tack for a more lyri­cal dy­namic as well as push­ing and pulling some rhythms (try fall­ing slightly late on some of the longer notes, as Hank does).
