EXAMPLE 1 Beach Boys style

Guitar Techniques - - PLAY: RHYTHM -

This first example is a fast paced, arpeggio based idea that was popular with both surf, and rock‘n’roll bands in the 1960s. The use of exclusively down strokes of the pick is an important factor in creating the sound, as is a light palm mute. The timing and dynamics need to be even and driving. The Beach Boys used twangy Fender guitars so go for a bridge pickup and select a bright spring reverb if you have the option - and turn it up!
