In our sec­ond ex­am­ple, we see how Mayer some­times uses short rhyth­mic, rep­e­ti­tious phrases, in this case de­rived mainly from a Bd Mixoly­dian (Bb-C-D-Eb-F-G-Ab) and Bb mi­nor Pen­ta­tonic scale (Bb-Db-Eb-F-Ab). As with any great gui­tarist, Mayer’s slip­ping in and out of var­i­ous scales is

a de­lib­er­ate the­o­ret­i­cal choice, but much more likely to be as a re­sult of the melody he hears in his head at any given time.
