Let’s com­pare the di­a­tonic chords of C ma­jor and C mi­nor by play­ing a sim­ple I-IV-V-I pro­gres­sion in each. Note how all the chords in the C Ma­jor pro­gres­sion are ma­jor, and all in the C Mi­nor pro­gres­sion are mi­nor.

Now let’s com­pare the 7th chords of C Ma­jor and C Mi­nor, again with a sim­ple I-IV-V-I pro­gres­sion. Hear­ing, un­der­stand­ing and be­ing able to play pro­gres­sions like these in the two par­al­lel keys opens up a world of mu­si­cal un­der­stand­ing.
