13th chords ac­tu­ally con­tain seven notes, but it is pos­si­ble to em­u­late the sound re­quired with a suit­able four-note voic­ing. In gen­eral, for G ma­jor 13 we’d play: root, 3rd, 7th and 13th; for G13 it would be root, 3rd, and 13th, (the 13th should be above the and Gm13 is root, and 13th. Other voic­ings may also con­tain the 9th or 11th. For G6 we use: root, 3rd, 5th and 6th – the 6th sub­sti­tuted for the ma­jor 7. Try out th­ese handy voic­ings.
